چکیده

Cantharidin, a vesicant agent, and asiaticoside, which promotes the healing of skin ulcers, were tested for carcinogenicity by topical applications to the skin of hairless mice. A short-term tetrazolium test indicated that both compounds were weak carcinogens. The compounds were then separately painted twice weekly on the dorsal skin up to about 20 months; some of the mice had previously been initiated with a small dose of 20-methylcholanthrene (MCA). A control group which received only the solvent benzene after MCA initiation was also studied. Cantharidin acted as a weak but complete carcinogen on the skin, causing carcinomas in 6.3% of the animals. These carcinomas did not appear before about 16 months of observation. Before this, the painted, MCA-initiated animals had a significantly lower number of papillomas of the skin than the corresponding control group with only benzene treatment. It therefore seemed that Cantharidin in the early stages of painting was tumor inhibitory, or "anticarcinogenic,"

Topical tritiated thymidine for epidermal growth fraction determination.

Direct autoradiographic identification of the epidermal growth fraction (GF) requires the delivery of tritiated thymidine ([3H]dThd) to the skin during the time interval of an entire cell cycle. The GF in normal human epidermis has not been directly measured using this technique because the systemic infusion of radioactive [3H]dThd in benign skin conditions is precluded by ethical consideration...

Protective effect of Fucoxanthin against UVB-induced skin photoaging in hairless mice.

Fucoxanthin, a major carotenoid in brown algae, has various beneficial effects. In this study, we evaluated the effect of topical fucoxanthin on UVB-induced skin photoaging in hairless mice. The dorsal skins were treated topically with a 0.001% fucoxanthin solution 2 h each time before UVB irradiation (5 times a week) for 10 weeks. The formation of wrinkles in UVB-irradiated skin treated with v...

Ambivalent Effects of Atorvastatin on Angiogenesis, Epidermal Cell Proliferation and Tumorgenesis in Animal Models

Background: A growing body of preclinical data indicates that statins may possess antineoplastic properties however, some studies have raised the possibility that statins may also have carcinogenic potential. Methods: An air pouch model was used for angiogenesis. Single or multiple applications of croton oil on the back of Swiss albino mice with or without initiation by dimethylbenz(a)antherace...

Study of active substances involved in skin dysfunction induced by crowding stress. I. Effect of crowding and isolation on some physiological variables, skin function and skin blood perfusion in hairless mice.

The effects of five levels of population density on various organs, the neuroendocrine system, skin function, skin blood perfusion, and blood parameters were studied in the hairless mouse. Skin barrier recovery was evaluated by measuring transepidermal water loss after tape stripping. Blood perfusion was measured by means of a laser Doppler imaging technique. The effect of a parasympathetic ner...
